I'm sure you will get much better responses than this but it also depends on the reason for not being able to sleep.

Noise - I'd like to suggest a decent pair of earplugs. Go for the type used on airplanes sold at Boots the chemist. Those ear plugs are designed to counteract multiple frequenceis and can help people sleep a bit more soundly if there is a noisy environment.

Stress - Other sleep aids are the good old tried and tested hot milk with cinnamon or whisky or brandy in hot chocolate.

Busy mind - Meditation (if you don't know how, I'm sure someone can advise here or if you want, I can post a basic Japanese version called Zazen).

Regular exercise helps all round by the way, jogging, swimming, dancing, etc.

Hope this helps a bit. Smile

I have heard of chamomile, jasmine or ylang ylang being recommended for sleep, but I have not tried any of them myself so I don't want to make any claims as to their effectiveness.

Camomile definately works.

Rosemary works for me personally, but I'm not sure if it would be effective for everyone.

Could also be worth looking at honeysuckle (the essential oil), a few dabs on the pillow before you go to sleep can be very soothing.

Hi Tess,

I really hope you are having peaceful nights now.

If you are, but are finding it hard to get back into normal sleep patterns, then managing your sleep patterns will probably help you. Just staying up all night and the following day will just make you ill (if you were thinking of doing this) and might even mess up your sleep pattern even more).

There are two main ways of going about this that I'm aware of, the first (preferable one) is where you start managing your sleep so you go to bed a little earlier each night over a couple of weeks. It could be that your eating patterns have also suffered so you need to try to eat earlier as well.

The other method is to reverse this (NOT preferable but necessary in extreme cases) where you go to sleep a little later each night and gardually change this time until you have gone all around the clock back to the normal time you would sleep. This iois a difficult method and would normally require you to have 2 weeks off work or study to achieve it. This is recommended by some doctors in extreme cases.

Using this 'managed routine' PLUS the other advice given to you by everyone else (don't forget that exercise is a good all round solution by the way! Even 10-15 minutes a day) should get you back on track soon.

I hope this helps Tess. Smile

I wish you the very best.

i appreciate the tips you wrote Smile but i don't think any single student has a normal sleep pattern lol especially now i'm working late shifts on mondays and fridays. but thanks!

I've found a couple drops of lavender oil on the pillow helps. Also CD's with sounds of the sea, or sounds of whatever feels right to you helps too.

Oh Yippee..... a place to put my "sleep" technique. I learned it in a mind control course ... years ago and it still works for me. It's a little more interactive than counting sheep is... but it is very similar. It allows for you to help your active brain to be thinking only about sleep. It's really very boring especially for those whose brains are used to being very active...and after a short amount of practise ( I'm gonna say a week) ... the brain recognises this silly game and ... agrees very happily ... Sleep sleep comes fast.

Imagine if you will (eyes closed of course) a large piece of paper, a blackboard, a huge movie screen... whatever... Modest
On a movie screen Imagine the letters "S L E E P" up there... slowly coming into focus. I usually visualise a blackboard... writing one at a time S .. L .. E .. E .. P This afterall is your intention... Arrow ERASE this word sleep ... and on the empty screen/page/blackboard write out 1.. 0 .. 0 .... for 100. Arrow ERASE/DELETE/FADE OUT whatever.
Repeat S .. L .. E .. E .. P. (ERASE) 99 (ERASE) S .. L .. E .. E .. P. (ERASE) 98 (ERASE) S .. L .. E .. E .. P. (ERASE) 97 ... Arrow and so on and so on...

Unless I am feeling Crying or Very sad ...or Finger or... Furious or... Grrr I rarely get to number # 90.
Funny thing is in the morning you will likely recall the last number as you drifted off to la la land.

Angel SWEET DREAMS ... Sleep

(( Oh yeah... Lavendar and chamomile are excellent Essential Oils for going to sleep on. (((Vetiver... if you can handle the scent works every-time. I tried to use this in massage blends on clients and LOL .. half way through the session... I could barely stay awake drunken )))

Hello. Newbie here...

Try to research 'Sleep Hygiene' on the internet, if you haven't already, it might be useful. It's nothing to do with washing your pillow or anything, it's more about how to tell your mind and body to go to sleep normally (or at least reasonably). I've had sleep problems since I was 14 (I'm 23 now), and I was recently told to try it out from a reliable source. She knows her stuff but I haven't properly given it a go yet, but I've read up on it and taken bits from it, and it seems sensible enough.
On the other hand, have you tried a glass of warm milk? It's pretty much an old wives tale but I reckon it's got something to it. Milk contains something called 'tryptophan', which is a natural sedative and serotonin replenisher... If not the lavender, jasmine, etc., thing might work. I think I would get into trouble if I recommended any 'alternative' herbal options so I shall refrain.
I'm curious for any information on this matter myself, as it happens, so I'd be interested to see what comes up on this page in the future...

What an interesting thread this is developing into ... lots of really good tips, I love it.

Recently, I was not able to switch my brain off so asked my sister if she had any lavender oil - she did, so I borrowed the bottle to sprinkle a few drops on my pillow.

Took the lid off the bottle - checked it had a dropper ... it had. Upended the bottle to wait for the drops to form ... deluge!!! The "oil" was like water!!! Razz I was smelling the lavender for the next couple of weeks! But, I must say ... IT WORKED A TREAT.

The other "trick" that I use is somewhat similar to Evie's ... but, as some of you are aware, I had difficulty with visualisation!!! With my technique I count to 100, slowly, in groups of tens - if I lose count, I have to start at the beginning of the previous group (for example, I lose count at 37 ... I have to start again at 30 and count up). When I get to 100 ... I count down back to 1. It is very rare for me to still be awake long enough to get to 1 again but, if I do, I start over again!!!

Like Evie's technique - this one bores the brain into submission!!!

Sexist bit now ... my late husband, Ken, had a technique of thinking about more than one thing at the same time to confuse the brain. He never did get the concept that this is a COMPLETELY NATURAL process for the female of the species!!!!!!!!!!! Awwww, Bless!!!!!!! lol!

If we all read and follow the advice given on this thread ... we should all sleep deeply and wake totally refreshed ... must get more practice!!!

Lavender is actually an adaptogen - so it can wake you up, or calm you, help you sleep. If you mix it with sandalwood it has a very comforting scent. Benzoin oil well diluted (as all of them should be) is very warming. My favourite apart from the lavender (2 drops) to Sandalwood(1 drop) in a teaspoon of carrier oil..is frankincense, nutmeg, rose and lemon (1 drop of each in teaspoon of the carrier oil) this is expensive but makes you feel wonderful and relaxed.....of course when I feel wonderful and relaxed I usually feel awake and energetic...so it all depends on the cause of sleeplessness - meditation and imagining a safe sanctuary around you works wonders!!!!!!

Herbs never really help me....crystals definately adapt my energies, and give me boosts, but I don't have the patience to sit there and let the "soothing smells wash over me" lol

You can always combine these things...the trick with the oils is to use them earlier and let them work their subtle magic in the background whilst you are still listening to heavy metal or whatever(!) Amethyst, Rose quartz and Aquamarine I find good for relaxation!!! A good glass of wine helps too..... drunken Sleep (joke! -well sort of anyway!)

The one thing that puts me to sleep (or helps1) is coffee...it just makes me sleepy, even though I KNOW it should scientifically keep me awake...I am weird like that...
