i have no problem with curses, theres no sort of morality in heathenism that says you should'nt and in Havamal it says " better to take revenge than to mourn". I think the most famous instance of a curse in heathenism is in "Egils saga", where Egil curses the King of Norway in a similar manner to grimnirs curse in his earlier post, where you get the landveittir or spirits of Hel to do the dirty work for you by setting up a nithing pole.

Very interesting! Now explain some of those big long words....or all of them! hehe I dont know much to do with curses as luckily I have not had to use or defend against them before. Explaination of the theories behind someof the above mentioned would be much appreciated for knowledge seeking! Very Happy x

landveittir are land spirits, when you curse like that you put runes onto a wooden pole and drive into into ground where they live. They become annoyed by it and seek to drive out the person for whom the curse was intended.

Can you imagine what the world would be like if it were that easy! This is pretty crude but my fella pointed this out: if magic was really that easy every teenage lad w*****g off over page 3 girls would have their own playboy bunny girl in their bedroom. Razz It tickles me that does! Laughing

If you want to read about basic no frills magic try Satanic bible by Anton La vey, it is good for its explanation of basic magic ritual. Its one of those books where you can easily grasp the ideas behind the rites so that it would be easy to adapt them to your particular path.

La vey does'nt actually believe in the biblical Satan, he just believes that man is an animal with certain emotions like greed and lust etc, these are the sort of things Christians try to rise above. He just calls it Satanism because it is the opposite of the Christian ideal. He only believes in humans and their desires. He gives three rites in his book, One to help or heal, one to curse and one to fulfill your lust. Its more humanism than satanism. He knew the power of Satan as a magical archetype.

I've read parts of the satanic bible and it is really interesting. I don't agree with all of it but alot of the stuff in there really made sense- the alternate commandments. Alot of just seems to be saying- be good to those who deserve it and don't allow yourself to be brought down by those who don't. Also I like the fact that it seems to embrace natural human urges rather than attempt to deny them.
Also Satan means 'against the church' and the personification of a horned devil was just a demonisation of the pagan god.

All,
Of course Amberlady has no real or valid insight into why Crowley elected to 'modify' the spelling of the noun ‘magic’ to ‘magick’, and thus prefers to throw up [vomit] the theory that he did this to simply ‘sound grandiose’. Take her to task.
Azi.

MOD NOTE: Azi, I have asked all members to get back to topic, if you want to conitnue this discussion, please make a new thread. Also, I think this is a very bold move for a first post on here! However, it is your choice to continue this way, but I believe it may make you unpopular.

Thanks!

L,
Clearly I would not want to be 'unpopular', yet nor would I wish to be seen as un-knowledgeable. Oh well, time enough for the myth to unfold. Silence will ensue.

I think Azi was just trying to defend his\her opinion. As for Paul Daniels being an illusionist not a magician, it does kind of add confusion as to why he called his show "The Paul Daniels Magic Show"... ( Twisted Evil HA! It's my turn to be argumentative...) I conclude there is little to be gained from arguing about how things are spelled. Some people genuinely can't spell (through no fault of their own) and one would hope they would not be slated just because they spelt words 'incorrectly'. Let us all forget about pointless arguments and get back to the topics.

VII,
Thank you for your words.
My original intention was to, in due course, offer an insight or three into why Fra. Perdurabo elected to adopt the final ‘K’ spelling of ‘magic’. In the event, I have decided this is a pointless exercise particularly considering I have been advised by 'management' that a ‘new thread’ is best suited to any such exposition.

Is there not an extant thread open for addressing this point? Possibly I am missing something here.
