Words that are lost in translation.

A colleague recently told me that there is a sign in LA Airport that says 'No Solicitors Allowed'. This is particularly funny for us because we a Solicitor is a Lawyer or Attorney in the UK.

When I was a teenager a lot of kids used to go around shouting 'Yo!'. A South East Asian friend of mine thought it was hilarious because in his language it apparently means 'Egg!'.

Are there any other words that are lost in translation that you know of?

In Ancient Hebrew, the words "Resurrect" and "Resussitate" are the same...so many Jesus didn't rise from the dead...he was just resussitated!

And the sweets, Pez!....In Spanish, Pez means live fish!!

When i was last in France, i was in a restaurant loking down the menu, and they had the Frenchm, then an English translation. They translated 'Coq au vin' to 'Cock in wine' I found that absolutely amusing.

This reminds me of an amazing website/book called Engrish.com. Full of translations gone wrong!

rofl rofl rofl
Good stuff!
One I saw in Denmark- Felix is Danish translates to Pussy! I'd therefore discourage anyone called felix visiting there- (actually it's a wonderful country, they should just go by a false name for a while, could be fun!)
